Gunwales, Inwales and Spars

Good news!

I can mill the inwales and gunwales from a single 16' length of 2x4. I'll cut it in quarters:

The pieces for the inwales will be planed to 5/8" The gunwales will be milled only enough to smooth them out.

Since the 16' length may not be enough for the gunwale, I can cut 4' from a second 16' piece to scarf together to make a long enough piece.

If I can find a piece with nice tight grain, the 12' length will be cut in half to create blanks for the boom and yard.

Mik's response to my question was the tight grain would be better for spars but even the looser grain wood would be fine for the inwales and gunwales - particularly if there are no knots.

So, once I'm set up at my daughter's and I have epoxy setting up, I'm going shopping!

That grain looks perfect for your spars. Does it have many knots?

No knots in that piece at all. Unfortunately, that piece got cut up and is now serving as part of a set of saw horses... My plan is to go back to the recycler and dig through the pile of 2x4s for similar pieces.
