GIS - Sacramento: The Beginning

GIS Sacramento: The Beginning

From this a new Goat Island Skiff will emerge. Well, this and a lot more, but this is the beginning. Finally. Actual progress toward the reality of dreams and memories.

While the actual cutting, gluing, shaping, etc. has yet to start, I have been busy. Shopping for the lumber for the foils was a task unto itself. Despite the early frustrations I am happy with Berry Lumber of Sacramento as a source for a large portion of the materials needed for the build.

The foils are the first project. Beginning with two 5/4 x 12 x 6 and one 5/4 x 6 x 6 boards of Western Red Cedar, and a bit of ash a friend will help me mill the staves to be laminated into the centerboard and rudder blanks. Once the the blanks are done I'll cut them to the proper shapes. Then a plane and sandpaper will take the blanks to the designed cross-sections. Epoxy, fiberglass, and paint will complete the foils.

Speaking of planes... I have discovered that talking about hand planes ranks right up there with politics and religion. Strong opinions. thoughts, and positions abound on what brand, what type, and how many planes one should have. One point of agreement stands out: there is no such thing as "too sharp." Right now I am looking for my first plane, and I am sure I will find a tool to get me through the building of the GIS.

More later.
